I'm here in Indianapolis right now attending the pinnacle of geekhood: Gencon! But the gaming isn't my topic of the day... I want to tak about the food.
Amy's here working on the book, so we've been able to go out to eat at yummy nice places. Yesterday, we went to Dunaways on the suggestion of the convention hall staffer. It was amazing.
Dunaways has been the winner several years of the Wine Spectator's Best Wine List in the World. (So say the placards on the wall.) It's certainly got a very extensive list, about thirty pages. And our experience there was phenomenal.
The service started good, but became amazing. We ordered a Barolo,
but a slightly different wine (about half the price) from the same
vendor came up from from the cellar. We noticed and our waiter took
it back to get the right one. Well, the
The meals were great. I had a simple ribeye, but they had excellent meat and it was perfectly done. Amy had a quail with a demiglace which was wonderful. I think Chez Leon is still perhaps a bit more imaginative (courtesy a truly amazing chef) but Dunaway's food is among the best I've ever had.
The great service didn't stop there. We decided on a dessert to split, but couldn't decide on a drink to go with it. We were thinking maybe Scotch or Cognac, but really don't know enough about either to have chosen from their (large) list. Asked our waiter, who said he wasn't sure either, but he'd send over "Jeff".
Mr. Dunaway came over, and after he asked a few questions about what we liked, suggested a port with dessert and some Armagnac afterwards. "I'll find something good for you." We left ourselves in his hands, and in a few minutes the dessert came out with an excellent vintage port, perfectly matched. After we had finished that, a Bas-Armagnac. Unsurprisingly, it was astounding.
All told, a stupendous dining experience. We'll be back next time we're in Indy. I don't know how we were blessed to have such careful attention paid to us, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a common experience at Dunaway's. Little details like the complimentary limo service to and from downtown hotels are a good indicator.
